Since February half term, the Year 1 & 2 children have become illustrators in computing. They have been learning how to use various different tools on a paint programme. After learning all of these new skills (including how to save their work!), they were then challenged to create illustrations for the story “Little Red Riding Hood”.

This week at forest school, the children in Hedgehog Class drew their own map of the forest, plotting land marks such as gates, the fire pit, the shelter, badger set and so on. This was not an easy task but they did a fabulous job!
Next week, Kris will hide Easter eggs and then put crosses on the children’s maps so that they can find them. What an fantastic set of skills for them to learn!
Safer Schools Update February 2022
Dear parents/carers,
Great news! We recently had our 2 year review of our participation in the Safer Schools initiative and we are delighted to report that the school has passed its re-accreditation. Mrs Ball would like to thank all those involved in Safer Schools including our brilliant Healthy Helpers school councillors.
Here is a message from Ian Bartlett, Crime Prevention Officer Shropshire Council:
‘Congratulations to St John the Baptist CE Primary School on maintaining the Safer School accreditation. The school was accredited a Safer School in 2004 and recently, Mrs Hollis with the support of Mrs Ball, held a Safer School meeting to update the school’s involvement in the security/safety initiative. The virtual meeting went well and I was impressed by the hard work of the school in preparation for the meeting. The Police normally attend the meeting but on this occasion, they had to forward their apologies. With the assistance of staff and governors, we reviewed security/safety measures, including the recent security improvements (fencing and entrance lobby) and we reviewed the incident reporting process. Fortunately, there had been no incidents since 2019 – excellent news. An essential element of the initiative involves communication and the parent/carer and pupil survey results were reassuring. It was a really positive meeting and it concluded with the school receiving an updated Safer School certificate. A future meeting will be planned for 2023.’
Thank you to all who completed the parental survey in November. The Safer Schools Group analysed the responses (25 in total) and the results are below:

Today we enjoyed a day of wearing yellow and blue in tribute to the Ukraine in light of recent events. We were also visited by Marianna Davis who spoke to all the classes about her work with Ukranian refugees. She then received our donations which had been made from the friends and families of school. Well done and thank you to everyone involved, with particular thanks to Mrs Davis for giving up her time to share her important messages – we were in awe of what you have achieved with your team so far!
As part of our Art and Outdoor Learning, we’ve been making observations and sketching patterns in the natural word before learning about how to sketch birds and flowers. Owls were very focused in their Forest School Art – it was a pleasure to see them engrossed in their art books in the woods.
As a whole class project, Owls also produced a sculpture of a pheasant (the National bird of Japan) using natural materials.
The Reception children have been busy practising their fine motor skills recently. Look at this fantastic cutting out!
A huge thank you to the children, families and staff for their very kind donations. The Fun & Games Council totalled the pennies and announced an incredible total of £194.27!! WOW!
Well done to everyone for such a great effort.
Evie was inspired by other members of Dragonfly class to get out in the community and do some litter picking.
She collected lots of rubbish with her very snazzy Paw Patrol litter picker – well done Evie, what a super job you’ve done!
Last week we held our ‘Pancake Flipping’ competition which had been organised by the Friends of Ruyton. The Fun & Games Council ran a timed ‘flip’ where children could toss the pancakes as many times as possible…

The Ruyton Runners took to the fields at lunch time today to complete their first mile. It was inspiring to see so many runners from Reception to Year 6 running together – there are 33 runners in total taking part in this challenge!
Many of these runners had signed up to complete the Shrewsbury Half Marathon on Saturday 9th April – one mile down, 13 to go!
