Yesterday the year 1 and 2 children did some fantastic work to start their unit on programming on Scratch. They were all challenged to create a space theme background this week. They learnt to use the fill tool, the paintbrush and how to change the colour they were using. They also learnt some great mouse control!

Out of this world painting!
Look at this fantasic painting the Reception children did in their child initiated time last week! They have been learning about space this term. They used lots of different techniques such as gluing, painting with a brush and printing. They even had to mix their own colours!
Microhabitat Experiment
Just before Christmas, the year 2 children were learning about habitats and microhabitats. As part of their science learning at forest school, they put some stones in an orange bag, tied it to some string and Kris then carefully put it into the river. This week, it was time to pull the bag out of the river and find out if anything had setup a new home in there. The children found lots of different things including leeches and a freshwater shrimp! We’re going to do the same thing again in the summer term to find out if we find anything different in the warmer weather.

Decoding Fun
We started a new unit of work in English today. Someone had sent us a message that had been written in code! We talked about different ways of communicating such as using braille, British Sign Language and Semaphore. We then had a look at the key that we been sent. We had great fun using the key to crack the codes for the messages!

Athletics success!
We are SO proud to announce the success of our Athletics team at the Sportshall Athletics today. We sent a Girls Squad and Boys Squad to participate in a series of relays and fielding events including javelin, long jump and speed jumps.
Against local schools, the Boys Team were overall WINNERS! They stormed to victory and represented Ruyton fantastically – Miss Ryan couldn’t believe how fast they all were.
Our Girls Team were victorious in a different way: with only 5 girls in Year 5 and 6 (all of whom got stuck in and participated), the remaining squad were made up with two Year 3s and a Year 4! Incredible achievement for a group of children who were representing their school for the first time at this kind of event.
Finally, a huge congratulations to individual winners: Mia (Y5) Chest Push, Matthew (Y6) Vertical Jump, Noah (Y6) Speed Bounce, and Charley (Y3) Javelin!
You made all the children and staff so proud. Thank you Team Ruyton!
