Thank you to everyone that came along to our phonics workshop for parents this evening. For anyone who was unable to make it, I will be sending some information home with the children tomorrow for you. In school, we use Rising Stars Rocket Phonics. They have a fantastic YouTube channel which has lots of helpful videos to support you with helping your child learn to read at home. You can find all of these videos by clicking the link below…

Forest School
This week, we linked our topic work on “Harvest and Autumn” with our visit to Forest School. We all picked some blackberries in a previous session. Yesterday, we harvested some apples from a couple of apple trees. When we got to Forest School, we very carefully used a knife to cut up the apples. Some of us helped Kris build a camp fire and then he cooked the blackberries and apples in a pan on the fire. We all got to try some with some custard… It was delicious!
Harvest
We love Wednesday afternoons because our little Bumblebees (Nursery) come through to Hedgehog Class for child initiated time. Yesterday, we were learning all about harvest. The children had a fantastic time singing and dancing to “Dingle Dangle Scarecrow”, playing with the small world farm, exploring paint with tyre mark rollers and making their own class scarecrow!
Forest School
We explored even more of the Drumbles forest school site today with Kris. We were all really interested in the badger sets and learnt how to treat them with respect. We also picked some blackberries that we are going to use in a cookery activity next week. Then we got to have some free play! The children enjoyed making witches potions, playing on the rope swing and climbing trees.
Maths
Today in maths, we were learning to find the odd one out in a set of objects. We did this through the context of fruit baskets. The children did a great job and they were all able to spot the odd one out in a group by the end of our session. Well done team!
Rabbit Class Homework 15.9.22
Homework and spellings will be given out on a Thursday and will be expected back in on the following Wednesday. We will have an informal spelling test on a Wednesday too to see how the children are getting on. Homework will be a mixture of online and on paper tasks!
The children have new log in details for Teams, which will be inside their homework books. If your child was new to the school this year then they may not have a log in yet but it will arrive very soon (hopefully!). When all children are able to access Teams I will post the homework on there as well as in books. Homework can also be submitted via Teams or brought into school on a Wednesday.
Homework this week is…
Year 1: Science – label the parts of the body & Spellings (a good chance to practise your handwriting too!) – try and write the spelling at least three times on the line.
Year 2: Science – Tick the statements that are true for each type of animal. Spellings (a good chance to practise your handwriting too!) – try and write the spelling at least three times on the line.
If you have any questions, please let me know.
Thanks,
Miss Horton
The Gingerbread Man
We came into class this morning and found footprints all over the carpet! We also found some ingredients left out on one of the tables. We looked at the ingredients and tried to work out where the footprints had come from. We soon realised that these were ingredients to make Gingerbread People. Some of the children thought that the Gingerbread Man must have left the floury footprints across the classroom floor. We all worked together to follow the recipe to make our own Gingerbread People. What a great way to kick off our English unit “The Gingerbread Man”!
Free Maths home workbooks 🤩
White Rose Maths Home Workbooks
At St John’s, we follow the White Rose Maths scheme for teaching and learning and they have released these fantastic workbooks that can be used at home; they may be printed or they could read on screen and answers recorded on paper. Your child may prefer to have a go at other year group workbooks to build up confidence and independence (or challenge themselves further!). Please ask teachers for support if needed.
Support for children – Winston’s Wish
Winston’s Wish is a fantastic charity which supports children and young people through bereavement. They have released the information in the link below for any parents and carers who wish to know more about how to support their children following the death of the Queen. Please do contact school if you would like any further support in this.
Homegrown Show this Sunday!
Message from the friends.
Hi All, welcome back to the new term. We all hope you had a lovely summer and are settling in well to the new term. The Friends look forward to meeting all our new parents (and will organise an event to meet everybody very soon). In the meantime please can we draw your attention to the village Home Grown Show happening this Sunday at 2.30pm at the village hall. We very much hope you will come along to support the show and all of the children of St John have got artwork on display at the show that they created last term under the theme “the commonwealth”. It will be being judged and winners chosen on the day. I’m sure your children will love to see it on display for everyone and be proud to show it off to you too. Please do come along if you can make it. We look forward to seeing you there. The Friends.
