Rabbits – Home learning for 10th June

Good morning – is it really the 10th of June already?

Maybe this morning you should start with a big THANK YOU! to whoever is working with you doing your on-line schooling – Mum or Dad, big sister or brother or maybe you are on your own?  Well take a minute to say thank you to anyone who is helping you.

So on with the work:  Here is a little starter activity to get your gray cells working!  Alphabetical Order – Alphabetical order

English:  Again, stick with bitesize if you prefer, or continue with your work towards creating a story. You should have some ideas on character, plot and today you are ready to write out your first ideas.

Plan the first paragraph with the following things:

  • Setting – where it is – what does your setting look like?
  • What will be happening?  What characters need to be in the first part of the story?
  • Use some fronted adverbial phrases, (later that day, first thing that morning, slowly and steadily ….)

Maths:  here are the lessons for today on white rose – you could also look on My Maths if you fancy a change!

Project:  I know that you have had some amazing ideas for your own sports event.  Today, I would like you to design your own sports uniform (strip) or clothing that is needed for your sport.  You can make a logo that goes with it.  This link might help if you are struggling to draw people.  Design your sports kit    Sports people drawing templates

Reading:  There are three different levels of tasks in this reading activity – select one that you find suitable for your interests:  The subject is the Paralympians. Reading Task for Year 2 and 3

I look forward to seeing your designs and ideas for new sports.

Stay happy!

Rabbits – home learning for 9th June

Good Morning Rabbits

I hope you are all well.  Maybe you are doing the Jo Wicks work-out each day?  I have been doing it on some of the days – it is quite a challenge!  I have also been doing Yoga and going on a long walk each day to stay fit.  Let me know what you are doing – bike riding, sailing, running.

Spellings:  the words are tricky this week but worth learning as they all fit with the theme of sports.

English:  You can either access the bbc bitesize lesson today – or you can continue with the plans for a story and look at the attachment for creating a character profile.

Character Profile

It is always fun to imagine your own story characters and to plan what they would be like and what they would do.  Use this sheet to help gather up your wonderful ideas.

Maths:  I have set some daily work on my maths if you are happy to follow that programme, but here are the tasks for today on the Whiterose – more fractions for both year 2 and year 3.

Year 3 lesson 2 answers

Project:  Yesterday, I asked you to create a front page for the project and design a sports pitch using your fractions.  Today, I would like you to make up a sports game all of your own.  You can then set out the rules of the game using bullet points, and the purpose of the game.  Please include the following things in your planning list or mind map.

  • A pitch, surface, field or court where the game is played
  • The number of players that are in each team
  • The bat, club or other thing that is used to hit the ball (or whatever object they hit)
  • A ball or object to hit
  • A goal of some type
  • You need a good name for your sport and then you can write out the rules that you decide.

Remember:  J K Rowling made up the game of Quidditch for her Harry Potter books.  Here is a short clip for you to watch:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1A6z7R-aaDw

Other authors have made up sports in their books:  Can you find out the name of the race in Alice in Wonderland?  use this to help:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8MUMO1RJws

I hope you have fun inventing a new sport!

See you tomorrow

Rabbits – home learning for 8th June

Good Morning Rabbits

This week I have found some interesting activities for you on different websites and hope that you enjoy doing the tasks.

Spellings:  as usual, I would like you to look at the spelling page and write out the new words for this week.  Remember to use this time to practice your lovely handwriting too.

Maths:  You can access the white rose maths but if you prefer, there are daily maths tasks on MyMaths for you.  Just do one of them each day.

Project:  This week it will be Games and Sports.  I know some of you will have seen that the sporting events around our country have been cancelled but that they are gradually going to be starting up again.  I am pleased about this – my husband is a big fan of Liverpool Football Club and wants them to win the championship by playing out the last few games, my mum is a huge Wimbledon tennis fan and will miss seeing her favourite players this summer, I will miss the cricket – I love watching the test matches.  So this week we will be doing activities all about sport and games that you enjoy.

Can you find pictures of all the bats, rackets, clubs or nets that you use in various games.  I have included a montage here below.  I would like you to begin the project with some drawing to create a front page for your booklet with drawings of as many different bats etc that you can find.

sport bats

Next:  using the knowledge that you all have of fractions, I would like you to create your own sports pitch.  It could be grass or tarmac, it needs to be a rectangle.  Within the shape you need to make two halves and within the halves you need to make two quarters.  You can then make any other fractions of the main pitch and explain what these are for – they might be areas where you score extra points, or where certain players cannot enter.  See what you can do with fractions on a sports pitch.

Have a great day

Rabbits – Home learning for 3rd June

Good morning Rabbits

It has been a great start to the week and I hope you are all back into the swing of things at home; mixing a bit of work with a lot of fun!

Handwriting – Please can you write out the spelling words for this week but I would like you to do this in a volcano shape.  I suggest that you draw the outline of the volcano on a piece of paper and then add the words to fill the shape of the volcano.

Reading:  I have two different reading tasks for you today – year 2 and year 3 but the year 3 task is quite advanced.  Good luck!

Project:  Today, I have set a more time-consuming challenge which should take you two days.  I hope that you have enjoyed learning a little about volcanoes.  You will have learned about the various vocabulary that is used, and also made a diagram about the Earth’s insides.  Today, I would like you to get crafty again.  Your challenge is to make an animation of a volcanic explosion.  You can use either drawings, models or pictures but you have to find a way to sequence the images so that they look like an explosion happening.

Drawing Animation:  we once made a zeotrope in class – a sequence of drawings that were slightly different each time but when you looked at them quickly, they appeared to be moving.  Here is a short clip that shows you how to create an animation using sketches.  I don’t think you need to see the whole thing – you will remember about drawing each picture slightly different –

Picture animation:  you can use pictures in a sequence, if you are able to find a series of still photos of a volcano eruption, you can sequence them and do the same action of flipping the pages to show the movement.

Model animation:  This is a bit more time consuming and tricky – but I think it is also a lot more fun and a wonderful challenge.  If you can model a volcano from clay, playdough or other modelling material, you can make the animation using a phone camera.  You need to take each picture then move the model a small amount. You can use different coloured clay or play dough for the lava flow and make it drip down the side of the volcano slowly.  See what wonders you can create!

I hope you have a wonderful day!

Mrs Cooke

Rabbits – Home learning from 2nd June

Good Morning Rabbits

I hope you are all well and excited about learning today. I am so sorry to those who were unable to open some of the documents.  I have attached the word search to the spellings page for today.

Warm up – here is a crossword puzzle for you – but you have to complete it yourself!  Volcanos Crossword Puzzle  You will need to look at the vocabulary that I have also provided to work out the answers!

Project:  To continue with Volcanoes, I have included some more information on how a volcano is formed.  Take a look at the powerpoint.  6. Structure of a volcano

Can you now do one of your amazing cartoon-strips for me?  I would like 8 squares each showing the sequence of the volcano’s eruption.  You can use vibrant colours and you need to explain in one sentence, what is happening in each of the pictures.  Remember this is an ACTIVE VOLCANO as it is exploding right now!  You could give your volcano a name – something that sounds exciting or from a distant place.

For your reading – I have included  a legend of a volcano – they are all around the earth and these legends that I will give you to read each day will show you where on earth they have appeared over the centuries:

Rabbits – Home learning for 1st June

Good Morning Rabbits and I hope that you all had a lovely half term.

I have put together some tasks for you today which will link in with the rest of the work through the week.  I hope you find it interesting!

Warm Up and Spelling Words:  I have included this wordsearch – please can you solve the puzzle and then write out the words three times for handwriting and spelling practice.

Grammar:  I have loaded a few activities onto Education City that will support you with some grammar learning this week – work through the tasks doing one each day.

Project:  I would like you to learn all about Volcanoes this week.  I have selected a few fun things to do that will get you used to the vocabulary such as the wordsearch at the start of today.  Here is a lovely little cartoon clip featuring two volcanoes – you may have seen this already:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uh4dTLJ9q9o

The next powerpoint shows you how the earth’s crust is made up of different types of rock and materials.  A Slice Through The Earth

Please can you make your own version of a slice of the Earth?  You could draw it – or perhaps make it from play-dough or some other materials.  See what you can find in your garden – you have probably got rocks there – imagine that they are actually tiny bits of the earth’s crust!

A Volcano erupts due to the pressure from the heat of the Earth.  Can you imagine how hot it needs to be to explode like that?  Have you ever seen popcorn exploding?  That is the same type of thing – the heat from the pan, heats the inside core of the corn grain and the steam bursts the corn apart.

There are many legends surrounding volcanoes and for your reading task to finish off the work for today, I have set this story for you. Volcano Reading Activity

Have a super day

Rabbits – home learning for Friday 22nd May

Good morning Rabbits and welcome to the end of the week and the half term!

I know it is a bit strange to think we are on half term next week – but we all need a holiday from things that we are doing – even if we are mostly home and not going to school or work.  Your parents probably need half term break too!

Spellings: So for today, I have a spelling test for you to do – select the correct spelling for each of the words and then check with the original list please.  Please open the Spellings page.

English:  BBC Bitesize have a nice lesson for you.

Maths:  I have a maths test for you – nothing too awful but it should be good to test your knowledge.

Reading: I have this comprehension task for you to do – read through and answer the questions.  Comprehension Task

Project: it is the last day of your food project and I have loved seeing the different things that you have all been doing this week.  Well done all of you for taking so much care with your work.

So I have have included a short clip from a wonderful film called “Cloudy With Meatballs”  my children watched this so many times when they were little.  Your job is to do exactly what the hero does in the story – to create a food machine that can make your favourite foods by simply pressing buttons.  I would love you to design this on paper and put in the various elements that you would need such as rolling pins if you are making pastry or flat bread – blenders if you are mixing herbs or fruits – some way of picking herbs and spices to make your food taste good.  The design can be as mad as you like – but you must also call it something!

Your machine has to be able to make a range of foods and you need to include the list on your design.

I really hope that you have fun with this project and you are able to use your creative brains to come up with some amazing things.

Have a super-duper half term everyone.  Have fun at home and I look forward to being in touch with you all in June.

Mrs Cooke

Rabbits – home learning for Thursday 21st May

Good Morning Rabbits

I got the job  of shopping for my family yesterday, and I was so excited to be out – but also to see the huge range of food that I can buy that comes from around the world.  The project today will be thinking about our multi-cultural food.  Please check over your spellings as I will pop a test on the page tomorrow.

Brainteaser:  I have put in a wordsearch for you this morning – I think you all enjoy doing these.  Food Wordsearch

Maths: I have included the maths tasks from white rose below.

Additionally, I would like you to do some practical maths – in order to price your food menus, it is useful to add up costs then divide them between the number of people who are eating.  So … I would like you to work out how much you should charge for a portion of cake – please look at the attached task and see how well you can use your knowledge of fractions to solve the puzzles.  Good luck!   Cake Brain Teasers

English:  Please access the BBC Bitesize for today’s lesson.

PSHE: Mrs Viner has posted a lovely note to us all about kindness.  For today, can you read her post and do some things linked to the idea of being kind?

Project: As I said at the start, I was amazed at the different foods available from all around the world – and just in my local supermarket!  There was a whole section of Greek food with amazing sesame breadsticks, stuffed vine leaves and ice-creams.  I saw Mexican Potatas Bravas and Lime and lemon cake, I also found multi-coloured pasta from Italy, Romanian Meat Balls, German Sausage and pickled cabbage and Turkish soft cheese.  So for today – you are going to select a country from the list below and do a poster for me of their most famous food and drink items.  I would love to see pictures that you have drawn and also writing that explains the type of foods they have.

So here are my suggested countries – but if you know others – please do your own choice:  My favourite food from Australia would have to be Fairy Bread – very easy to make – but I am not sure I would want to try Erwtensoep snert – which is from Holland!
