In this lesson, we will look at the purpose of editing and why it is important. Then, we will break the editing checklist into two parts: one that checks for punctuation, spelling and sense; and the other for language choices, sentence types and structure. After we have practised editing, the children will be expected to edit their recounts from the previous lesson as their independent task.
Edit your recount on Onenote from yesterday – if you handed your work in I’ve had a look at it and I may have suggested something you can change to get you started.
Change your font colour when you are editing.

In RE today I want you to think about what you already know about the religion of Islam. It might have been a while ago since you covered it at school so you’ll have to dig deep into your memory!

Have a go at completing this circuit. You can set a timer on Alexa/Ipad/Computer for one minute for each exercise. Count how many repetitions you do for each exercise.

Owls Home Learning – Thursday 14th January

Good Morning Owls! It’s Miss Horton here 😊 I hope you’ve all had a good week so far, you can tell me all about it at our TEAMs meeting this morning. Mrs Hollis said you’re all getting to grips with using TEAMs now, which is great news.

Here is your timetable for today but remember this is only a guide and you can work through the lessons at your own speed. In this lesson, you will start off by investigating which sentence starters are appropriate for newspaper reports. Then, you will look over your plans from the previous lesson and use them to inform your writing when writing a recount. You will also be using the success criteria to support you in your writing. You will look at a shared piece of writing, followed by a modelled piece of writing. Both methods will support you to write your own recounts.
I have attached a notebook page to this assignment on Teams so that you can type your work on, alternatively you can write your work in your book and attach it to the assignment by pressing ‘add work’ and uploading a picture. Today you will be learning about stop motion animation, you will plan a storyboard for your own animation about online safety.
I have created a Onenote document on Teams for what you need to do today. You have some videos to watch and questions to answer based on the videos. Click on the links on the document to watch the videos and type your answer directly onto the onenote document. As soon as you start typing the document will starting saving your work so your work is being saved as you go along – very clever! You can take a picture of your storyboard and attach it to your assignment by pressing ‘Add work’. Remember to press ‘Hand-in’ when you have completed all your work

*Science – Last week, I asked you to look at the work of Carl Linnaeus and his classification system of living things.  Hopefully, you thought about how important it is to have a system of classifying livings things and what it would be like without it.  Think of it as a filing system that helps with identification or a gigantic family tree.

Looking at the classification system, a wolf spider would fit as follows:

As you can see, a wolf spider is the species name but it also falls into the class of arthropods.  This means it has some of the same characteristics as crustaceans like crabs i.e. a hard outside skeleton.  Today, I would like you to us the sheets below to find out more about the characteristics of invertebrates.  There are 8 different sections but you do not have to complete all 8, you can pick at least 4 of your choice.

*PE – As this afternoon is one of our PE afternoons, I want you to find something active to do.   As with the last lockdown, you may have to get a bit creative!  So, with that in mind, how about going for a family walk/bike ride, trampolining in the garden, devise a garden circuit and test it out, set yourself some 60 second challenges such as how many star jumps can you do in a minute etc?  Also, Joe Wicks is posting new PE with Joe workouts on a Monday, Wednesday and a Friday (live at 9am or catch up on his YouTube channel).  Remember that physical exercise and fresh air is as important as schoolwork.

Religious Education:

The first half of this term we will be learning about the Pillars of Islam. Today I want you to have a look at these buildings. What are the pillars for? Why do the buildings need them? What would happen if they weren’t there?

Are pillars always physical? What might someone mean by someone being ‘a pillar of the community?

Have a think about our school rules. How are these like pillars? What would happen if we didn’t have any rules?

On these pillars I would like you to write some beliefs/values/rules you use in your everyday lives. These could link to our school values. For example, I believe that you should treat everyone with respect and always be kind to others. Put your pillars into order of importance. Ask somebody at home (or at school) if they would put them in the same order as you? Will everyone put them in the same order?

(You don’t have to print these pillars off you can just write them into your books or type it up on your computer – this just gives you an idea of how you could present your work)

It’s Miss Horton here, this wasn’t how I pictured my first day in Owls class being! Most of you will know me from being in Hedgehogs last term and I did manage to pop in to say hello to you all on the last day of term…but that seems like a long time ago now.

Mrs Hollis and I have been busy trying to get our heads round Microsoft Teams this week. We had a crash course yesterday and hopefully you will be receiving your log in details soon. If all goes according to plan we are hoping to do a Teams meeting with everyone in Owls at 9am on Friday. It will be lovely to see you all and a good test to see if I remember everyone’s names!

English:

Following on from the English work you have been doing this week the next lesson is about gathering evidence for a newspaper report. You will start by writing a complex sentence with a relative clause. Next, you will look at where you would be gathering evidence or information from if you were journalists writing your own newspaper reports. You will then learn how to take notes when gathering information. Lastly, you will practise how to use brackets in sentences.

Today, we are looking at dividing fractions by integers. You can watch the video or look at powerpoint – or both!  The stars tell you how difficult the sheet will be (*=developing **=expected ***=greater depth). If you are in year 5 do the developing sheet first, you may find it easy and want to try a harder sheet. You must do one reasoning & problem solving sheet and one varied fluency sheet. You can mark your work using the answers provided.

Computing:

This term we will be developing our understanding of the importance of staying safe online. Over the next few weeks we will be writing, designing, filming and editing stop motion animations for younger children to educate them about the potential dangers online.

Today you are going to be doing some research in preparation for making your own video animations.  I would like you to watch this video Jigsaw – YouTube and think about these questions.

  • Why should you only talk to people you know online?
  • What should the girl have done differently in the video?
  • What is the most important tip you will share in your video?
  • What topic will you focus on?

Your video will be for children in year 3 and it needs to be about an online safety issue. It doesn’t have to be one of the topics from today’s video, it could be something you’ve looked at in the past and think it would be important to discuss with younger children, eg: keeping your password safe.

You will need to consider the age of your audience and ensure that the content you are planning is appropriate for this year group.

In order to ensure the information within your video is helpful and accurate, you will need to do some research. Here are some helpful websites:

Try to make some notes as you browse – these can be typed up on the computer or written down in books, it’s completely up to you!

Music:

In this video Mr Butler describes 3 different ukuleles that he likes to play. They are made of different materials and have different musical purposes. Your task is to watch this video twice. The first time, your task is simply to watch the video. The second time, you are allowed to take notes.
