Hedgehog Class have been having an amazing week this week and they are in the process of creating some beautiful art work around our theme of “Living on Planet Earth 2020-2021”. For this piece of work, the children were asked to draw a picture of their favourite lockdown memory onto a piece of polystyrene. They then used rollers to cover them in block printing paint and we then printed these onto card. We can’t wait to put them all together to see the final result!
As part of our science topic on Plants and Our Environment, the children were set the challenge of searching for specific trees at our forest school site this week. They were given a list of trees that they had to find as well as a leaf identification chart. The children were amazing at looking at the leaves on the different trees to identify them. They were allowed to pick one leaf from each different type of tree to then peg onto a washing line along with the labels for each tree. They showed amazing care for the environment though and tried to find leaves that had fallen to the ground rather than pick them off the trees!
Today in RE, we started our new topic “What is the Torah and why is it important to Jewish people?” We learnt that the Torah is a special script which tells Jewish people the stories in the Old Testament. We know that Jewish people believe that it is so special that they don’t touch it with their hands. Instead, they use a yad to follow the text. The children looked at lots of different yards and the beautiful patterns that they had on them and then designed their own. Here’s a selection of what they did…
During our forest school session just before half term, the children in Hedgehog Class had a great time creating faces from clay at the Drumbles. This session involved learning lots of new skills including sculpture and art and design. We even got some science in there too as the children experimented with changing the consistency of the clay. Some of the older children even investigated whether a smooth or rough surface was better to create their sculpture on. They found out that their faces stuck to a rough surface better because the clay had something to grip on to!
We laughed, ran, sang, walked and some even cartwheeled! Thank you to everyone who sponsored our children for their annual Fun Run; we had such a brilliant time and it was so lovely to see all the school participating in an event together in the warmer weather!
A huge thank you to our Friends Of Ruyton group who set the wheels in motion and got this event going; our children and staff are so lucky to have your support and encouragement whilst working to make our school an even better place for learning. We are very grateful to each and every one of you!

Finally, a massive ‘well done’ to the children (and staff!) who kept moving the whole 30 minutes – many at a speedy run (with Nick setting the pace!) and some clocking up a whopping 3 miles!

Our class TEAMS page is still missing I’m afraid, so spellings this week are here rather than set as an assignment on TEAMS. Hopefully it won’t be long until our TEAMS is back up and running. I also send paper copies home each Thursday too, so don’t worry if you can’t print them at home.
Don’t forget to do a little spelling test at home on Wednesday next week and to send me a photo of the results either by email or on Tapestry please.

The year 1 children have been learning all about plants and trees over the last few weeks. Today they did some independent writing to tell me everything that they know about oak trees! Here’s a couple of the fantastic pieces of writing that they did…
Hedgehog class had great fun on Tuesday afternoon cooking some dandelion fritters. They all chose and picked their own dandelion to be cooked and made a batter. They then carefully put their dandelion head into the pan and we covered them in the batter. They were extra tasty with a little syrup on top! Not everyone enjoyed theirs but they were all superstars for trying them! The children all know that they shouldn’t pick and eat flowers unless an adult has said that it is ok.
Have a look at the fantastic work that the Reception children were doing this morning on doubling numbers! One group were busy finding number doubles using the pom-poms and the other group were finding number doubles using a mirror!
This week at forest school, the children were set a challenge! The week before, Kris had found 4 different types of flowers at our forest school site. He had photographed them and then written some clues for the children. They had to match the clue to the correct flower. They were amazed to find out that dandiions are edible! The children then had to use the photos to find the flowers in the forest school site. They had great fun working together to findi the flowers!
