Have a look at the fantastic artwork the children in Hedgehog Class did yesterday! This term, they are going to be studying two different artists. They started the unit yesterday by looking at Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” and then began developing their own painting skills.

Year 1 and 2 Hedgehog Class self portraits
Year 1 and 2 children in Hedgehog Class have been creating self portraits as part of their art lessons this term.
The children spent time thinking about colour, shape, texture and proportion and trying out different techniques before creating their self portrait.
Can you guess who is who?!
Children in Need 2021 – the grand total!
We had the BEST day of sparkle and shine on Friday for Children in Need and we are delighted to announce we raised a whopping £116.05! An incredible total for our small school.
Thank you to everyone who donated, glittered-up and then cleaned-up afterwards!
Repeating Patterns
Look at some of the fantastic work that the Reception children have been doing on repeating patterns in Maths this week! What little superstars they are!
Habitats and micro habitats
Yesterday, the Reception, Year 1 and 2 children were learning about habitats. On the way to forest school, Kris asked us to look out for lions in peoples gardens and for fish in the trees. None of us spotted any which led to a great discussion about why we didn’t see either of those animals in either of those places; they are the wrong habitats for those animals!
We talked about various habitats and which animals we might find living in those habitats. We know now that the forest school site is a woodland habitat. Kris gave the Reception and Year 1 children a woodland animal soft toy and in groups, they were challenged to make a habitat for that animal to live in. They thought really hard about what each animal would need. They all made sure that their habitat was safe and warm and some of them even put a drink of water for them!
To extend the Year 2 children’s learning, they learnt about micro habitats. First they were split into two groups. They had to see what they could find in two different micro habitats; under logs and in trees.
While they were searching, they found evidence of another animal that lived in the woodland area. They found some feathers that were probably from a wood pidgeon.
After that, the children put stones into a net bag. Kris carefully put this in the river, tying it to the fence so that it wouldn’t float away. We’re going to leave it there for a few weeks and see what animals start to make a micro habitat in there. We can’t wait to see the results!
Pizza Making
After weeks of learning about vegetables and doing some fantastic pizza research and designing, today was the day that the Year 1 & 2 children got to make their vegetable pizzas! I hope that they all enjoyed eating them as much as they did making them!
Harvest 2021
It was a pleasure to welcome parents / carers and families of our children to Church this morning as we celebrated this year’s Harvest Festival. Thank you to everyone who came.
It was a pleasure to hear the children singing in Church again and every class did a fantastic job in sharing their work and learning – a huge well done to all the children.
Happy Harvest from St John’s!
Forest School Science!
The Year 2 children had a fantastic time back up at forest school this week! And the Reception and Year 1 children enjoyed themselves as always! This week, we had a science aspect to our forest school session. The children were set the challenge of finding lots of different objects in the forest school site. They then had to sort them into things that are alive, things that were alive and things that had never been alive. At first, it seemed quite easy but then the children started having lots of debates about whether a leaf that had fallen off a tree was still alive or not even though it was still green in colour. We had some super discussions and the children were using some great vocabulary! Well done all!
