On Thursday we were lucky to have glorious weather for our trip! We arrived at Trevor Basin and there we were met by the staff from the Canal and River trust. First, we had a water safety talk where we learnt how we needed to stay safe whilst on the trip around the canal. Next, we enjoyed our first workshop where we dressed up as Navies and boat women to help build the aqueduct. Whilst we were constructing the parts we learnt about the lives of the Navvies and the different materials that were used to construct it. We really impressed the members of staff with our knowledge that we had already about Thomas Telford and the aqueduct. We successfully managed to recreate the aqueduct! After a quick break, it was time for our second workshop where we learnt about what life was like prior to the Industrial Revolution, how the land was used and the reasons why an aqueduct was needed. Again, Miss Hindley was really impressed with our knowledge recall from our Geography and History lessons. After lunch, it was time to put on our geography brains and conduct some surveys about land usage and human impact on the area, we also created a sketch map of the aqueduct and surrounding area. We even managed to watch some people magnet fishing to help tidy up any rubbish in the canal! Overall we had an excellent day and Miss Hindley was really impressed with the children’s knowledge and behaviour! Well done Dragonfly class!

Last week, in geography as part of our learning about canals we were tasked with plotting a journey from Maesbury along the Shropshire union canal to a destination of our choice. We used maps to follow a route along the canal, we designed an itinerary in our groups, plotting where we were going to stay over night and where we might stop to look at points of interest. Every group did an excellent job and were really excited to find on the map where they lived too! Great job team!
